Bus Driver Impaled By Log During I-95 Accident
December 7, 2010 - A serious accident involving a Greyhound bus and a logging truck on Interstate 95 left one man seriously injured and another 20 people with minor personal injuries. According to a report at ABC News 4, the accident occurred outside of Orangeburg during the late night hours of Nov. 30.
Deputies say the victim was driving a Greyhound bus on I-95 when it rear-ended the logging truck, which did not have functioning brake lights. The bus driver was impaled by a log that crashed through the windshield, and police say it took more than 2 hours to extricate him from the mangled wreck. Due to the severity of his injuries, first responders wanted to airlift him to the nearest trauma hospital, but the weather did not cooperate and he was transported by ambulance instead. The victim has been identified as a 60-year-old man, but his current condition is not known.
More than 20 passengers on the bus also suffered personal injuries, and they were transported to various local hospitals, including Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. All of those injuries are considered to be non-life-threatening. The driver of the logging truck was not injured.
