Car Accident on U.S. 278 Kills Bluffton Man
November 5, 2010 - A resident of Bluffton was killed last week when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding a motorcycle. According to a report the Island Packet, the accident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. last Tuesday as the motorcyclist was driving on U.S. 278 in Bluffton.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the fatal accident. Their report indicates that the victim was approaching the intersection of Sawmill Creek Road and U.S. 278 when he was hit by a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was attempting to turn left onto Sawmill Creek Road. The truck drove directly into the path of the motorcycle, and the motorcyclist crashed into the truck's right side.
The victim has been identified as a 41-year-old man. He was riding a Suzuki GSX-R6 motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the motorcycle crash. The victim was taken to Hilton Head Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the accident.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 48-year-old man from Adams Run, was not charged. He was not injured in the crash, but an unidentified passenger in his truck was taken to Hilton Head Hospital for treatment. Those injuries were not life threatening.
