Charleston Bridge Accident Leads to Fines
December 23, 2010 - The truck driver who crashed his truck on the Eagle Drive overpass near Interstate 26 on Sunday has been fined for his role in the accident. According to a report at the Charleston Post and Courier, the truck exceeded the height limit for the bridge.
The truck accident caused a huge mess on the Eagle Drive overpass and caused $75,000 in damage. Six additional vehicles were damaged by falling concrete, but fortunately no one was hurt. Investigators say the driver was behind the wheel of a flatbed truck loaded with a forklift when he crashed shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The truck itself was under the bridge's height limit, but the forklift was not. The driver has been fined $237 for his role in the crash.
The bridge is still structurally sound, according to inspectors with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. However, it will have to be repaired when the I-26 widening project is complete. At least one lane was closed for more than 5 hours as crews inspected the damage.
