Georgetown School Teacher Killed in Car Accident
October 13, 2010 - A young teacher employed by the Georgetown County School District was killed on Sunday in a rollover car accident. According to a report at WCBD TV, the victim was returning from Charleston to her home in Huger when the car accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Police say the victim was traveling eastbound on United Drive in Huger when she crossed into oncoming traffic and over-corrected, which caused her Chevrolet Cobalt to overturn and rollover onto the side of the road. The victim, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has since been identified as 29-year-old Alison Harrigan, a teacher at Rosemary Middle School, which is a part of the Georgetown County School District. Harrigan taught sixth-grade math. She previously taught at Pepperhill Elementary in North Charleston.
The principal of Rosemary Middle School described Harrigan as a dedicated teacher who "loved her students." She coached the cross-country team and helped plan a number of school fundraisers. The school is providing grief counselors to students and has planned a memorial service on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
