Lancaster Child Dies in Fall From Moving Truck
February 4, 2011 - A 3-year-old girl was killed on Tuesday when she fell out of a moving truck in Lancaster County. According to a report at the Charleston Post and Courier, the fatal accident occurred on Tuesday evening as the girl's family was in the midst of moving into a new home.
Investigators say the rented truck was being used to assist in the move, and it was parked in the home's driveway. According to the girl's family, the driver's side door was left open and somehow the child climbed up into the truck and put it into drive. Presumably the truck was left idling with the keys in the ignition, but investigators have not confirmed this.
The truck apparently started rolling backwards down the driveway when the child tried to jump out of the truck and fell onto the driveway. Investigators have not said how the child was able to climb into the pickup truck or who was supervising her when the tragic accident occurred.
The child was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators are currently classifying the death as an accident.
