North Charleston Police Officer Arrested for DUI Crash
February 2, 2011 - An officer with the North Charleston Police Department was fired on Monday after he was arrested for drunk driving on Saturday. According to a report at The Herald, the officer crashed his squad car shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The officer was fired on Monday, according to a spokesman with the North Charleston Police Department. Investigators say the officer was driving his squad car on S.C. Highway 28 when he lost control of the vehicle in Bennetts and drove into a ditch. The DUI crash was discovered by two separate North Charleston officers, who were looking for the officer. The department did not say why the officers were looking for the officer, and whether or not they could not contact him on the radio.
The North Charleston officers arrived at the same time as a trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and they all discovered the officer attempting to drive his squad car out of the ditch. The officer told them that he had crashed in the ditch while attempting to avoid a deer.
It is not known if the officer was visibly intoxicated or submitted to a breathalyzer, but he was cited for driving under the influence at the scene of the DUI crash.
