Police Chase on I-26 Ends in Crash
January 21, 2011 - A Charleston man is under arrest after he led police and sheriff's deputies on a lengthy chase that ended with a car accident. According to a report at ABC 4 News Charleston, the chase started shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff's Department attempted to pull over a 2001 Lincoln Continental on Ashley Phosphate Road. The Sheriff's Department has not said what sort of traffic violation initially caught their attention. The driver of the car took off and fled onto Interstate 26 while deputies pursued with their sirens blaring.
The suspect drove down Interstate 26 for several miles through North Charleston before he lost control of his car and crashed on the Morrison Drive off ramp. The suspect attempted to flee on foot, but he was apprehended by sheriff's deputies and officers with the Charleston Police Department who had been called in to assist. It was not immediately clear if the suspect was injured in the car crash.
The suspect is facing a number of charges in connection with this chase, including driving with a suspended license, unlawful possession of a gun, and failure to stop for police.
