Semi-Truck Crashes on Eagle Drive Overpass
December 21, 2010 - A semi-truck crashed on Interstate 26 on Sunday, causing thousands of dollars in damage to the Eagle Drive overpass in Charleston. According to a report at ABC 4 News, the truck accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
It is not yet clear what caused the accident, but we do know that a semi-truck crashed into support beams on the Eagle Drive overpass. Investigators have not yet said if other vehicles were involved or if this was a single-truck accident. Debris from the overpass landed on the road below, causing damage to 6 cars and an unknown number of injuries. The truck driver's identity has not been released, and it is not known if he or she suffered personal injuries.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation inspected the overpass and declared that it is still structurally sound. However, the truck accident caused at least $75,000 worth of damage. The Department of Transportation is not expected to make those repairs until it finishes widening Interstate 26. Most of the lanes on westbound I-26 were closed for 3 hours on Monday afternoon.
