South Carolina Motorcycle Helmet Law: Could It Save Lives?

With over 70 deaths of motorcyclists in South Carolina in 2010, we cannot help but draw attention to the fact that South Carolina does not have a motorcycle helmet law. Many motorcycle riders feel as though creating a motorcycle helmet law would take away from their personal freedom. On the otherhand, many have seen the deadly consequences of not wearing a helmet while riding and firmly believe that a law requiring helmet use should be put in place.

So, let's take a look at South Carolina motorcycle accident statistics for 2010:

Accidents Involving Death of a Motorcyclist (By County)

Greenville - 13
charleston county motorcycle accident statistics

Charleston - 8
Lexington - 5
Oconee - 5
Horry - 4
Aiken - 4
Jasper - 4
Other Counties - 30

So far in 2011, Horry, Lexington, and Greenville Counties have the most motorcyclist fatalities, with over 80% of the riders not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Could these deaths have been prevented if riders were wearing a helmet? We will never know the answer to that question. But, what we do know is that in states where there are helmet laws, like North Carolina, the number of yearly motorcycle accident deaths is extremely small in comparison to the number in South Carolina (there have been only three reported deaths in North Carolina, while South Carolina had 76).

It is important to note that South Carolina does require motorcycle riders under the age of 21 to wear a helmet, unlike Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire, which do not have any helmet use requirements. We hope that these states will soon realize the importance of, at the very least, protecting children who are passengers on motorcycles.

The statistics here show that motorcycle accidents are prevalent in South Carolina and the results of the accidents are devastating. Although we understand the desire for motorcyclists to be able to ride free, we would rather see them safer with helmets.
