Train Accident Kills One in Georgetown County
November 22, 2010 - A Florida woman was killed on Monday after the RV she was riding in was hit by a train in Georgetown County. According to a report at CarolinaLive.com, the accident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on Monday morning.
The RV was driving on Highway 521 in Georgetown County when the driver encountered a train crossing near Nine Mile Curve. Troopers are still investigating this fatal crash, but they believe that the RV drove around or through the crossing arms and was then hit by a train. Pictures from the scene show that the brown RV was crushed on the passenger's side and then pushed a short distance from the train tracks. A woman sitting on the passenger's side in the RV was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her husband, who was driving the RV at the time of the accident, was initially transported to Georgetown Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, the driver has been moved to Medical University of South Carolina. Troopers are still trying to notify the next of kin, so the identities of the victims have not been released. However, the couple was believed to be traveling in the area from their home in Florida.
