Value of Back-Up Sensors

Each year, back-over accidents kill 100’s of US children.  In many cases, the accident happens in the child’s own driveway. Oftentimes roll-over incidents involving children occur because a small child can’t be seen in the rearview mirror. When the parent unknowingly begins backing out of the driveway, a child standing behind the car may not be seen. With a large number of SUV, trucks, and vans on the road, the result is larger blind spots, and more objects that are not seen by drivers.

To help with this growing problem, several companies have created a line of after-market back-up sensors. These sensors include a small motion detector, which is mounted on the vehicle’s rear license plate. The motion detector is connected to an alarm inside the car. When the vehicle comes within five feet of an object, the alarm will sound and increase in frequency as a driver gets closer to the object.

While  sensors come standard on some new cars, after-market back-up sensors cost an average of $100, a small price to pay to keep a child safe.
