Awendaw is a town located in Charleston County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the population of Awendaw was under 2,000 people. Awendaw was named by the Seewee Native American or "Sewee" tribe. The town was heavily damaged by Hurricane Hugo in September 1989. In 1992, the town of Awendaw was first incorporated and elected its first mayor, William H. Alston.
