Seven Tips For Parents Of Children With TBIs

1) Learn, Learn, Learn! At the Shelly Leeke Law Firm, we preach that knowledge is power. The more you know about TBI, the more you will be able to understand and help your child. There are many organizations and websites throughout the country devoted to brain injuries and TBI. 2) Be open and vocal with your child's medical providers! Ask lots of questions. Understand everything you can about your child's injury and their treatment. Don't be shy with doctors. They are there to answer your questions and help you and your child. If you feel like a treatment is not working or you want to try a particular treatment, discuss this with the doctor.

3) Keep notes on your child's treatment and progress. Keep every document the doctor gives you in regard to your child. If you need to make copies, make sure you keep the original. Make notes about what was said at doctor's appointments and keep tract of any improvement or deterioration that your child has made.

5) If your child is able to return to school, plan before they return. It is crucial that parents contact school and discuss the child's needs and abilities prior to the child returning to school. The school may need to institute new educational programs to help your child. It is important that both parents and teachers have an understanding of what the child needs and should accomplish.

6) Have your child tested to see if he or she has special education needs. Help the school created an Individualized Education Program for your child.

7) Correspond with your child's teacher. Make sure the teacher knows how your child is progressing at home and make sure you know how your child is doing in school.
