17-Year-Old Girl Killed in Johns Island Crash

March 23, 2011 - A 17-year-old girl died on Saturday after the car she was riding in crashed in Johns Island. According to a report at Live 5 News, the accident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Deputies say the victim was a passenger in a 2003 Buick Century driven by her sister, a 19-year-old girl from Johns Island. The car was traveling on Maybank Highway when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The bulk of the impact occurred on the passenger's side, where the 17-year-old girl was sitting. Neither one was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the car crash. The victim suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after the car accident. The 19-year-old driver suffered personal injuries and is being treated at MUSC in Charleston.

The driver's 1-year-old son was also in the car at the time of the accident. Although the child was sitting in a booster seat, the seat was not latched properly in the car. The child was also transported to MUSC, but the extent of his injuries is currently unknown.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is still investigating this fatal crash.
