AAA has found Charleston County to be #1 for car accidents in South Carolina. They also found that fatal accidents were more likely to occur in rural areas. These findings were based on their analysis of 2008 crash statistics in the state. Calhoun County was found to be the safest county for car accidents in the state.

AAA Ranks Charleston County #1 for Car Accidents

AAA has found that car accidents are more likely in Charleston County than any other county in South Carolina. They based these findings on their analysis of South Carolina's 2008 crash statistics. The motor club also found that fatal car accidents were more likely to occur in the rural counties of South Carolina that border Georgia. the most dangerous counties for fatalities included Allendale, Barnwell, Chesterfield, Edgefield, and Darlington. These five counties account for seven percent of traffic fatalities, but "only three percent of vehicle miles traveled statewide." Car accidents are more common in rural areas becuase the roads are narrower, have fewer traffic signals, and there are fewer police to partol the area.

While Charleston County is the most dangerous, AAA found Calhoun County to be the safest for car accidents, with less accidents and fatal accidents.
