Asbestos Exposed After Fire Burns Through Apartment Complex

Posted on Dec 28, 2012

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Eight units were affected by the fire that ripped through Bridgeview Village Apartments in downtown Charleston five weeks ago - exposing asbestos in three of the apartments.

As of today, seven families are still displaced while the units are being tested for asbestos. State law requries a contractor be hired to test all units. Those who occupied units where asbestos testing came back negative will be able to re-enter the home and retrieve their belongings.

A spokesperson with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control discourages foot traffic during the testing process, as it could cause the dangerous asbestos particles to spread.

It is still undetermined what caused the Nov. 12 fire.
