Driver in Serious Condition After Rolling Gas Tanker on I-26

Posted on Apr 30, 2013

Berkeley County, SC - 26-year-old William Wieters was listed in serious condition at MUSC after rolling the gas tanker he was driving on I-26, following a two-car crash near exit 191.

Witness, Jason Washburn pulled the trapped Wieters from the leaking truck. The truck's tank held 8,700 gallons of gasoline, which was spilling everywhere.

Washburn said he witnessed an older pontiac driving extremely slow down the interstate when the tanker slammed into the back of it. The impact caused the truck to roll multiple times. Wieters will be charged with driving too fast for conditions.

Originally, it was estimated as much as 4,000 gallons of fuel was spilled, but now it is believed to be way less.

The fuel didn't actually spill on the road, just along the side. The Department of Health and Environmental Control was notified.
