Former Gov. Sanford's Brother Denies Liability for Drowning Death of Boy

Beaufort, S.C. - Former Gov. Mark Sanford's brother and his brother's wife have denied liability for the fatal drowning of a 6-year-old boy who was found in a pool during a party that they hosted in August.
John and Julia Sanford claimed that they had not been notified that the boy could not swim and they believe that were supervising the children appropriately.
Camilo Andres Restrepo-Lopez was taken to MUSC in Charleston after he was found at the bottom of the pool during the party that took place at Coosaw Plantation. He was pronounced dead two days after the accident occurred.
Lopez's family decided to file a wrongful death lawsuit in October against the Sanfords in order to recover actual and punitive damages. The Sanford's attorney, Laura Evans, of Charleston, responded to the lawsuit with a denial that the Sanfords failed to properly supervise the children during the pool party and that they were not informed of the boy's inability to swim.
Lopez's death was considered to be accidental, according to the coroner, and as a result, no criminal charges were filed against the Sanfords.
