Romeo Romero, Jr. went to the Lexington County Detention Center on Sunday and surrendered himself to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
One of the key aspects that led to the arrest was that a Pelion police officer stopped Romero for speeding and wrote him a ticket after the accident, not knowing that the incident had occurred. The traffic stop gave the South Carolina Highway Patrol a tip as to who the suspect may possibly be.
The accident occurred on Wednesday, February 8th at around 6:41pm, when 59-year-old Irma Hudson exited her truck on SC 302 in order to pick up trash that had fallen out of her vehicle. Hudson was hit and killed by a pickup truck and then the truck fled the scene. There was a child in Hudson's vehicle, but they were not injured.
Romero has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death. He may receive additional charges for the incident.
