Richland County Police Officer in Critical Condition After Fatal Car Accident

Philip T. Hawkins of Sumter A Richland County police officer is in critical condition after he was involved in an automobile accident that killed the other driver.

George Mickens Jr. 36, of Sumter County was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland with serious injuries and is listed in critical condition after his patrol car collided with another vehicle. The accident happened near Shaw AFB on US 76 at SC 441 on June 30, 2011 at or around 10:20 am.

Philip T. Hawkins,67, of Sumter died instantly from head injuries in the wreck. Officer Mickens was on duty and heading to a court appearance in Richland County.

Cpl. Bryan McDougald stated that the South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting an accident reconstruction that will block US 76. Traffic will be rerouted to SC 265.

The only information that is being released at the time is that Officer Mickens was traveling westbound in a 2010 Crown Victoria and Hawkins was traveling South on SC 441 in a Cadillac Escalade SUV. The collision took place in he crossing, which is controlled by a traffic signal.
