Sheriff Releases Report on Fatal James Island Car Crash

March 16, 2011 - The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has concluded their investigation into a fatal car accident that claimed the life of a young woman in February. As reported at Live 5 News, the car accident injured an additional 4 people who were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The sheriff's report says that the victim, a 19-year-old woman, caused the fatal car accident when she drifted into oncoming traffic in her Ford Explorer. The victim was driving on Folly Road in James Island. The Ford Explorer crashed head-on into a Ford F-250 traveling the opposite direction on Folly Road and then rolled over onto its side. The pickup truck attempted to swerve to avoid the oncoming vehicle and instead crashed into a house in the 1700 block of Folly Road.

Pictures from the scene show the dark blue Ford Explorer resting on its side with severe damage to its front end. There were 4 passengers in the Ford Explorer during the car accident, including the 19-year-old driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The other 3 victims were treated and released at local hospitals. The sheriff's office says that none of the passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the James Island car accident.

The driver of the Ford F-250 also suffered personal injuries. The report concludes by saying that no additional circumstances -- such as speed or alcohol -- were involved in this fatal crash.
