St. Matthews Police Chief Dies in SUV Accident

March 23, 2011 - The St. Matthews police chief died over the weekend in a fatal car crash. As reported at The State, the accident took place shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. St. Matthews is a small city located approximately half way between Charleston and Columbia.

Authorities are still investigating how this fatal crash occurred, but initial reports indicate that the police chief, a 60-year-old man, was driving a Chevrolet SUV on Burke Road when he lost control of the vehicle. He drove off the roadway and overcorrected before crashing into a row of trees on the side of the road. The victim was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, and officials say he suffered a spine fracture, in addition to other serious injuries. The victim was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. It was not immediately clear if the police chief was on duty at the time of the crash.

Officials are investigating to determine what caused the police chief to lose control of his SUV. The victim apparently had a heart condition that could have led to the accident, and one official has also speculated that the police chief may have been distracted by a cell phone.
