Tractor-Trailer Hits Utility Pole on I-526 in West Ashley

West Ashley, S.C. - A tractor-trailer collided with a utility pole on Wednesday afternoon causing Interstate 526 eastbound to be shut down.
At around 2:30pm, the 18-wheeler ran off of I-526 just past Westmoreland Bridge and hit the utility pole. Emergency crews have been working to clear the accident, but both eastbound lanes at exit 11A have been shut down. One westbound lane of I-526 has also been closed.
The condition of the driver of the tractor-trailer has not yet been released.
*******UPDATE*******
The driver of the tractor-trailer has been identified as 25-year-old Matthew Middleton. Middleton says that he does not remember the accident because he he was knocked unconscious after he hit a bump while driving.
Witnesses reported that they did not see the tractor-trailer brake before hitting the sign. Middleton received a ticket for careless driving.
The damage to the electronic traffic sign that Middleton hit has been estimated at $150,000.
