December 14, 2010 – A young man who played baseball for Charleston Southern University was killed on Saturday night in a car crash. According to a report at the Charleston Post and Courier, the victim has been identified as a 19-year-old freshman student who played his first season with the Buccaneers in 2010. The accident occurred shortly before midnight on Saturday night in Prosperity.
Police say the victim was alone in his Dodge Charger when he lost control of the vehicle on Mt. Pleasant Road. The car veered off the road, crashed into a row of trees, and burst into flames, according to WISTV.com. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Newberry County Coroner believes he died instantly. No other vehicles were involved in this fatal accident. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash to determine what caused the victim to lose control of his vehicle.Â
According to his Facebook profile, the victim graduated from Mid-Carolina High School before attending Charleston Southern University. He played catcher and pitcher for the Buccaneers before his season ended with an injury. Funeral services will be held this Wednesday at Zion United Methodist Church in Prosperity. The family has created a fund in the victim’s name.
