Orangeburg, S.C. – A driver was killed on Monday afternoon after he hit a Bowman Middle School bus head-on on Charleston Highway, south of Orangeburg.
The school bus was returning to Bowman Middle School from a special program at Clark Middle School when the accident ocurred at around 4:00pm. Nathaniel Raspberry, 21, was driving a 1997 Toyota east on Charleston Highway when he lost control, exited the right side of the road, returned to the road and hit the school bus head-on.
Raspberry was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of blunt force trauma. There were three other passengers in Raspberry’s vehicle. They were taken to Orangeburg Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries sustained in the accident.
Lessie Njie, 56, was driving the Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five bus at the time of the accident. Njie was taken to the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center as well to be treated for injuries.
None of the seven students that were riding the school bus were injured in the accident.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the wreck.
