A Cayce, SC man has been detained as a suspect in a deadly hit and run which killed pedestrian Brunson Wallace Hendrix, 47, as he was crossing Airport Boulevard on the night of July 16th, 2011. Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman avers that Hendrix died on scene and that, most likely, he was killed on initial impact.
Suspect Lance Carl Burt, 43, was later apprehended at a nearby bar after police received a tip from a witness. Burt admitted to police that around 10:50 PM he had “bumped into something.”
The witness who observed the hit and run claims that they tailed Burt’s white Chevy 2500 to the bar at which he was apprehended. When Burt entered the bar, the witness notified the authorities.
The police report noted that Burt’s eyes were glazed and he gave off an aroma of alcohol. Once escorted outside the bar, Burt confessed that he had hit something earlier but was unsure of what. After conducting a field sobriety test, Burt’s blood-alcohol content was found to be a 1.7, well over the legal limit. Burt was then placed under arrest on charges of felony DUI and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. He is being held on a $217,000 bond at the Lexington County Detention Center.
A second car in connection with the accident, which is thought to have struck Hendrix after Burt’s intial collision, is still being sought by authorities. The vehicle in question is believed to be a gold-toned Mercury Sable with a beige interior, model year between 2000-2007. A red paper dealer tag with white writing was witnessed in place of the vehicle’s license plate.
Witnesses informed police that they observed the vehicle pull into the nearby Mobil gas station, and then flee the scene on police arrival. The occupants are thought two be two adults, with a juvenile in the back seat. Authorities are seeking the couple for questioning that may help further the investigation of the accident.
