February 10, 2011 – A small child is fighting for life after he or she was hit by a van while playing outside. According to a report at Live 5 News, the car accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on James Island.
Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office have released few details about this serious pedestrian accident, but initial reports have leaked out to local media outlets. Investigators say the 4-year-old child was playing outside in front of his family’s house when he was struck.
It was not immediately clear if the child was on a front lawn or sidewalk, or if he or she was playing in the street in front of the home, which is located on Robert E. Lee Boulevard. The victim was transported by ambulance to MUSC Medical Center in Charleston. Deputies say the child’s injuries are severe, and it is not yet known if the child will survive. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
Deputies have also not identified the driver of the van, but have only said that there are no immediate charges forthcoming. It appears that the van was impounded to perhaps provide clues or more information on this serious crash.
